A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Raj Yoga Meditation on Promotion of Mental Well-Being among alcoholic patient at selected De-Addiction Center

ABSTRACT:
Alcoholism, a chronic disorder with often devastating health and economic consequences has multiple causes with psychological, social and biological factors, also known as the Bio psychosocial (BPS) factor; determine the course of an individual's health-related outcomes. NHMS 2016 also reports 4.6% prevalence for alcohol use disorders. The institute for health metric and evaluation, in its 2017 report, ranks alcohol as the 8th most driving factor for disability and death. The study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of raj yoga meditation on promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patient Quantitative approach with one group pre-test, post-test design was used for the present study. The sample for the pilot study consists of 10 alcoholic patient selected by probability convenient sampling technique. Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being scale. During the pre-test the demographic data and level of mental well-being was assessed by Warwick-edinburgh mental wellbeing scale after that the percentage of pre-test mean score 25.5 and post-test mean score 52.9. The standard deviation valve for pre-test 6.39 and post-test 8.04 respectively. Since the p valve is less than 0.05 hence the research hypothesis (H1) was accepted. The study revealed that the rajyoga meditation was effective in promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patient.

INTRODUCTION:
Alcoholism, a chronic disorder with often devastating health and economic consequences has multiple causes with psychological, social and biological factors, also known as the Bio psychosocial (BPS) factor; determine the course of an individual's health-related outcomes
Therefore, a single approach such as pharmacotherapy and/or behavioral counseling may not effectively treat the complex nature of the disorder. In addition, every individual is not equally affected by each cause, necessitating a comprehensive individual assessment in order to adequately determine the individual's treatment needs.
Alcohol is a depressant, which can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) in your brain and affect your feelings, thoughts and behavior. Treatments are varied because there are multiple perspectives of alcoholism. Most treatments focus on helping people discontinue their alcohol intake, flowed up with life training and/or social support to help them resist a return to alcohol use. Medical treatment for alcohol detoxification usually involves benzodiazepine, phenobarbital along with group therapy, Aversion therapy Counseling,Yoga.
Meditation is a state of being in that place just beyond every day consciousness, which is where spiritual empowerment begins. The Spiritual awareness provides us the power to choose healthy and positive thoughts over those which are negative behaviour. We start to respond to situations, rather than just reacting to them. We started to live with harmony, we created better and happier, healthier relationships and we will change our lives in a positive way. Raja Yoga meditation is a form of meditation that is accessible to all people with similar backgrounds. This meditation has without ritual behavior or traditional mantras and it can be practiced anywhere at any time. Raja Yoga meditation is performs with open eyes', which makes quick, versatile, simple and easy to practice.
NEED FOR STUDY:
According to a 2016 National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) report, a comprehensive alcoholism therapy must include a combination of behavioral therapy, psychosocial counseling, pharmacotherapy, exercise, relapse prevention and other services to meet the needs of the individual patient to accommodate issues as age, race, culture, sexual orientation, gender, pregnancy, parenting, housing, and employment, as well as physical and sexual abuse.
The National Mental Health Survey NHMS (2016): conducted by NIMHANS in 2016 reported a prevalence rate of 22.4%for substance use disorders in India. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Raj yoga Meditation on Promotion of Mental Well Being among Alcoholic Patient at Selected De-Addiction Centre in Tirunelveli.
OBJECTIVES:
· To assess the pre-test and post test scores regarding promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patient before and after Raj Yoga meditation.
· To evaluate the effectiveness of Raj yoga on promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patient at De-addiction center.
· To find out the association between post test scores regarding promotion of mental well-being with their selected demographic variables.
HYPOTHESIS:
· H1- There will be significant relationship between the pre-test and post-test on mental well-being among alcoholic patient at selected de-addiction center.
· H2-There will be a significant association between the post test scores with their selected demographic variables such as age ,education ,Occupation , religion, type of family, Monthly income , Drinks in week , Drinks in month , Habitant , Other habits.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
Quasi experimental one group pre-test post-test design was adapted for alcohol dependents in sneka mind care hospital in Tirunelveli.
Sample:
Sample size 30 alcohol dependents. Convenience sampling technique was used for this study.
Section A: (Demographic Data):
It consists of 15 items related to demographic data of the subject such as age, education, Occupation, religion, type of family, Monthly income, Drinks in week, Drinks in month, Habitant, Other habits.
Section B: (Structure Knowledge Questionnaire):
The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale Standardized 14item questionnaire‘s scored of 1to 5 designed to measure the level of mental well-being. All questions are given score of 1 for each correct answer and 0 for each wrong answer.
Scoring Procedure and Score Interpretation:
The total questionnaire was14 the total score was converted into percentage and the resulting score was range as follows.

Ethical Considerations:
· Informed consent and right to privacy.
· Maintain confidentially of data generated from the participants by using separate quotes.
· Participants will be informed that the data collected will be used only for research purpose.
· The researcher will explain the nature of study to the participants.
· Prior permission has been obtained from the honorable medical director of Sneka Mind Care Institute; Tirunelveli.Tool was verified by experts before data collection.
MAJOR FINDING OF THE STUDY:
a. Depicts that in the age group of the subjects, 12 (40%) were 20-30 years, 13(43%) were between 31-40 years, 5(17%) were between 41-50 years.
b. Regarding religion of the subject, 12(10%) were Hindu, 10(33%) were Muslims and 18(27%) of the samples were Christian.
c. In regards to the educational status of the patients, 10 (33%) were illiterrate, 13(43%) the secondary school education, 7(17%) were high school and degree.
d. Regarding type of family, 15(50%) were nuclear family and 10(33%) belonged to joint family and 7(17%) were extended family.
e. Regarding the monthly income, 4(13%)were5000-10000, 10(33%) were 10001-20000, and 16(54%) were 20001 and above. With respect to occupational status of the patients, 18(60%) were daily wages, 4(13%) were government employee and 8(27%) were private employee.
f. In regarding how many times do you drink in week, 10(335)were 2-3times in week, 4(13%)were 4-5 times in week, and 16(54%) were 6-7 times in week.
g. Regarding the habitant 16(54%)were rural, 8(26%) were urban, and 6(20%) were semi urban.
h. Regarding other habit 20(67%) were smoking and 8(26%) were tobacco chewing and 2(7%) were snuff.
i. Distribution of pre-test scores regarding promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patients 9(30%) was having poor mental well-being and 21(70%) were having fair mental well-being.
j. Distribution of post test scores regarding promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic pantients 24(80%) were having good mental well-being and 6(20%) were having fair mental well-being.
k. Comparison of raj yoga meditation on promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patients pre-test means percentage 85% and post-test mean percentage 15%.
l. Paired ‗t‘ test was used to find out the effectiveness of raj yoga meditation by comparison of pre-test and post-test score of promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patients. It was found that ‗t‘ valve was statistically significant at 5% level. This showed that raj yoga meditation was effective.
m. This study concluded that it was effective in Raj yoga meditation on promotion of mental well-being.

Effectiveness of raj yoga meditation promotion of mental well-being among alcoholic patient.It shows that before intervention level of the value were 25.5 after the intervention level of the value were 52.9 DF=29
CONCLUSION:
The studies conclude that the Raj Yoga Meditation had significant effect of promotion on mental well-being among alcoholic patients at de-addiction centre.
